The Great Santini - Pat Conroy

Title: The Great Santini
Author: Pat Conroy
Publisher: Avon
Pages: 506

Content: This work of fiction is the story of LCol ‘Bull’ Meecham, a Marine fighter pilot who sees himself not only as the greatest human being that has ever lived but, more importantly in his mind, as the greatest pilot who ever strapped a jet to his back. He is loud, brash, arrogant, domineering and authoritarian….and he apologizes for none of it to anyone. His character represents all that offends the ‘sensitive sect’ of society and all that is needed to ultimately stand in defence of that selfsame society. As much as he irritates with his hubris, the reader is able to see the deeper currents that define his beliefs and set the tone for his actions. A thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying read, it calls to mind what drives the non-politically correct military man and what sets them apart from the society that needs as much as disdains them.
